It’s business as usual in the Great Lake Taupō district despite the minor eruption of Mt Tongariro, within the Tongariro National Park, last night at 11.50pm.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL), the company operating the Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields, has opened for business as usual today.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is currently closed and visitors are encouraged to make use of alternative tracks around Whakapapa and Mt Ruapehu. The Taranaki Falls, Whakapapanui and Silica Rapids day walks are all open and unaffected.

The Department of Conservation is expected to make a decision on re-opening the Tongariro Alpine Crossing within 72 hours.

Destination Great Lake Taupō Marketing Manager, Donna Jarden commented that the region’s popular activities were all operating as usual today, with no effects felt from this event.

“You can still bungy jump, enjoy a thrilling jet boat ride and relax by the largest lake in the southern hemisphere – yes we are welcoming visitors as usual.”
