Police in Lower Hutt are investigating a robbery at the Westpac Bank in Petone earlier this morning.

Detective Sergeant George Campbell of the Hutt Valley CIB says at around 9:10am this morning, a man entered the Westpac Bank, on the corner of Jackson and Queen Streets and approached a female teller.

"The man asked for a sum of money and handed over a note. The teller gave him a small amount of cash and he then left on foot and ran across Jackson Street and headed in the direction of the Petone Railway Station."

Detective Sergeant Campbell says no one was harmed in the incident.

The offender is described as a male Maori, of medium build and was wearing a black beanie, dark gloves and a grey and black patterned hooded sweatshirt. He also had a distinctive orange plaster above his left eye.

"We hope someone will recognise this offender in the attached CCTV images and contact us as soon as possible."
