BLENHEIM

This Sunday, a cherry blossom festival coupled with the longstanding Japanese tradition of honouring the elderly will be at the heart of a Japanese-themed day at our own public Japanese Garden – at Harling Park near the top of Howick Road.

It’s a day for grandparents and grandchildren in particular. There’ll be kite-flying and a home-made paper boat floating competition and there will be an opportunity to try your hand at origami.

There’ll also be a prize for the oldest person to come along – and a special prize for a family who can produce three generations whose ages add up the closest to the round 100 years.

Harling Park, named after long-time Blenheim mayor Sid Harling, was built as part of Marlborough’s sister-city relationship with Tendo and Otari in Japan.

  • BYO picnic from 11.00 am-2.00 pm, Sunday 26 August, at Harling Park.
