One of Hamilton’s most loved playgrounds is to get new equipment.
The Lake Domain junior play area, near The Verandah eatery, will undergo a transformation with the installation of a brand new modular unit for young children.
Hamilton City Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Manager Sally Sheedy says the upgrade is part of a Playground Renewals Programme, and the new equipment will improve the experience for young children and families.
“This is a particularly popular playground, with thousands of children enjoying it every year. But with that popularity comes wear and tear, so after 13 years of use, the current play equipment will be replaced,” Miss Sheedy says.
“The new equipment for the junior play area includes some great features children will love – several climbing nets, various slides, as well as balconies, climbing walls and aspects for smaller children such as shop counters, a telescope, a cooker and a ship wheel.”
Miss Sheedy says the replacement work does mean the junior play area will be out of action for several weeks, with new surfacing and fences included in the refit. Historic concrete cars and boats will remain at the site, and parts of the old playground equipment will be kept in storage for future use. Other play equipment will remain open to the public for use.
Work to remove the existing play equipment and replace it with the new Playco unit begins on Monday, 27 August, and is expected to take five weeks. It will be open for play in late September, in time for October school holidays.
