Christchurch Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 17-year old Christchurch girl yesterday [Saturday].

Police were called to a park on the corner of Hansens Lane and Hayes Avenue, Upper Riccarton,  at approximately 4.40pm yesterday afternoon by Ambulance staff.

Detective Sergeant Craig Farrant says attempts to resuscitate a 17-year old girl both by members of the public and Ambulance staff at the location were unsuccessful.

Initial enquires indicate that a small group of females were inhaling butane gas, commonly known as “huffing”, in the area prior to this incident.

Police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the death, which will now be referred to the coroner. A post-mortem is expected to be held today [Sunday].

Detective Sergeant Farrant says enquiries will also be made into the sale of butane to youths in the area.

The identity of the girl has not been released as next of kin have yet to be notified.

Police say that while the cause of death has yet to be confirmed, the incident highlights the dangers of people sniffing butane or “huffing” as it is known.

No further information is expected to be released today. Police will advise any further updates by way of media statement.
