Trees in Oakura’s Shearer Reserve that have fallen foul of erosion and wind will be removed.

The trees are along Wairau Stream, and have either fallen into the water or are about to do so.

District Arborist Conrad Pattison says the heavy rainfall during August has sped up erosion along the stream’s banks.

“The trees then got knocked about by the wind and some have fallen into the water,” he says.

“We need to get them out so that the waterway can run clear again, and not cause a flood during the next downpour.”

The removal of between 10 and 15 small trees will take place at the end of either this week or next week, depending on the weather. The reserve’s skatepark will be closed during the work.
