Work is under way to fix New Plymouth’s ill-chiming clock tower.

The clock is chiming on the hour but has gone silent on the quarter, half and three-quarter marks.

Maintenance work has begun and Manager Property Assets Peter Handcock says some parts will need replacing.

“We’ll need those parts to complete the repairs,” he says. “These are old mechanics so there’s a fair bit of searching required to get what we need.”

The clock tower opened in 1985, replacing the 1907 clock which had been demolished in 1969. The current tower incorporates the original clock and its mechanism.
