Cupcake Day for the SPCA has once again been a resounding success for the organisation – and all thanks to cupcakes, lovingly baked, decorated, sold and devoured by people up and down the country.
Thousands of Cupcake Cooks baked up a storm, raising money for animals in need at their local SPCAs. Tens of thousands of cupcakes were baked for the day, and over $250,000 has been raised – and still counting!
“Animals will benefit throughout New Zealand from the amazing contributions of Cupcake Cooks. This year we raised even more than last year’s $230,000,” says SPCA National Chief Executive Robyn Kippenberger.
Cupcake Cooks also vied for the titles of Most Money Raised, Most Cupcakes Baked, and Most Creative Cupcake. Fabulous prizes were donated by Breville, Vision Products, Countdown, Kiwicakes, Max Fashions, Bell Tea and Coffee Company, Bachcare, Queen Fine Foods, Edmonds, Ooby Ryn, Mr Vintage, Milly’s Kitchen and The Cake Shop. This year’s winning entry for the Most Creative Cupcake was from Kerry Morris of Auckland.
Judge Emily Taylor of Chelsea NZ’s Hottest Home Baker says, “I was overwhelmed by the quality and choice of entries. It was a hard decision and in the end I chose the winning entry because of Kerry’s clever, edible interpretation of the Cupcake Day logo.”
Due to the high quality of entries, SPCA also decided to award a Runner Up and two Special Mention prizes.
Cupcake Day for the SPCA 2012 would not have been possible without the generous support of its key sponsors Woman’s Day and MORE FM. The SPCA is also grateful for the many organisations that lent their support to the event including the pr shop, and the thousands of Cupcake Cooks who took part.
“I’m sure I speak for all SPCAs and the animals they care for when I thank all who baked, sold and bought cupcakes,” says Ms Kippenberger. “We’re aiming for just as much fun and success next year.”
