The Christchurch-West Melton Zone Committee will meet on 27 September for its monthly meeting to discuss water management issues in the zone.

The committee will begin by inviting community members to contribute to the meeting, before receiving an update from the Regional Committee.

Next, the committee will receive feedback on an early working draft of the Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management from a group of young people who attended a Youth Hui facilitated by Environment Canterbury.

Last month nine Christchurch youth aged between 14 and 24 attended a two-day Hui to get involved in local water management. The Hui involved a full-day field trip to visit significant sites in the region before gathering at Rehua Marae to learn about Ngai Tahu values and join in a facilitated session on the draft ZIP.

At Thursday’s meeting the committee will consider the latest version of its draft ZIP with a view to preparing it for public feedback in October.

The draft ZIP recommends actions, responsibilities and time-frames for activities to help achieve the principles, targets and goals set out in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).

Once local feedback has been processed a final version of the ZIP will be presented to councils to form the basis for the design and realignment of water management work programmes and long term plans.

The Christchurch - West Melton Zone Committee has been working since November 2011 to understand the major water management issues in the zone.

Committee meetings are open to the public and community members are provided opportunities to participate in water management discussions and share their ideas.
