There is relief in sight for residents who need to get rid of TVs in the wake of the switch of the television signal from analogue to digital in Hawke’s Bay.

Unwanted TVs should not just be thrown in the rubbish bin. A much better option is to have the parts recycled which will prevent phosphorous and lead being put into the landfill and it will allow the recovery and re-use of metals such as copper and silver from circuit boards.

From October 13th to October 28th, Hastings District Council in partnership with RCN e-Cycle will offer an amnesty for residents who want to drop off those unwanted television sets.

During the amnesty period, there will be NO COST to leave your unwanted TVs at the old Mitre 10 Mega carpark in St Aubyn Street, Hastings between 9am and 4pm daily. They will then be disposed of in the environmentally correct manner.

This disposal operation is for TV sets only, not for other types of e-Waste.

Hastings District Council Waste Minimisation Officer Dominic Salmon says “The amnesty period offers residents the chance to get rid of their old TVs and help our recycling effort. It is much better that these sets are recycled which will allow the material to be re-used rather than being sent to the landfill.”

Following the end of the amnesty period the Environment Centre in Russell Street, Hastings and the Henderson Road recycling centre will continue to accept television sets for disposal but there will be a charge, although it will be at a heavily discounted rate.

So take this opportunity to get rid of your unwanted TVs. The amnesty period runs from Saturday October 13th to Sunday October 28th from 9am – 4pm daily at the old Mitre 10 Mega site in St Aubyn Street, Hastings.

For Hastings District residents who live closer to Napier, it may be more convenient to take your TVs to the amnesty site at the Mainfreight depot in Tyne Street, Pandora.
