There's been a lot going on at the John Street / Adelaide Road intersection over the past weeks - with most of the work set to be completed by early December.

The project to upgrade part of Adelaide Road is progressing - with the western side north of John Street being widened to ease traffic congestion. The corner of John Street and Adelaide Road is being realigned and a retaining wall constructed in front of Zip Plumbing.

Some electricity and telecommunications cables have been moved underground on Riddiford Street as far as the hospital, and this will continue down Adelaide Road to Hospital Road.

The Council's City Networks Manager, Stavros Michael, says these projects are a combination of improving traffic flow, enhancing the street environment and renewing the city's infrastructure.

"We do as much as we can to coordinate these projects. In the vicinity of John Street, we've also had roadworks related to the new supermarket, and our water infrastructure company, Capacity, is replacing an ageing water main in Tasman Street."

In the coming weeks, the old wooden trolley bus poles will be replaced with steel poles, and the ground floor of Loafers Lodge will be moved back to allow space for the footpath.

We'll slightly widen Adelaide Road for a right-turning lane into the supermarket car park, and also landscape the southern corner of Adelaide Road and Riddiford Street.

Once all this work is completed, Capacity will replace a section of sewer main in Adelaide Road from Drummond Street along to John Street, and the final road resurfacing will be done early in the new year.
