$20 000 dollars worth of scholarships were awarded this week to young leaders in communities throughout New Zealand.

The Arrow Foundation was set up by Arrow International in 2010 to deliver social programmes that benefit the community with a particular focus developing young leaders. The Foundations first programme was the Arrow Foundation Leadership Scholarship. It was initiated to recognise Year 13 student, who are preparing to further their education at a tertiary institution and demonstrate strong leadership qualities through initiatives within their school and community. Over the last three years the Foundation has given $70,000 of financial assistance to winning students.

In May 2012 every school in New Zealand was invited to submit an application for a student who they believed was showing outstanding leadership potential and initiative both at their school and in their community. In August the Arrow Foundation received 206 applications from around New Zealand.
“The calibre of the applications was phenomenal this year and the judges had an exceptionally difficult task selecting the six scholarship winners” says Phil Doyle of Arrow International.

The judges included Hugh Morrison, CEO and Phil Doyle, Project Development Director both of Arrow International and Murray Burton, Principal of Elim Christian College.  They selected the winners based on the leadership qualities they had shown both at school and in their wider community; those who created their own opportunities outside of school; those who went beyond the norm or beyond what was expected of them; and those that continued to maintain a good school and life balance.

The winners are:
• Ben Dowdle, Pakuranga College, Auckland - $5,000 Scholarship
• Boyd Becker, Greymouth High School, Greymouth  - $5,000 Scholarship
• Benjamin Hamilton, Hillcrest High School, Hamilton - $2,500 Scholarship
• Ben Hawken, Hastings Christian School, Hastings - $2,500 Scholarship
• Holly Cadzow, Columba College, Dunedin - $2,500 Scholarship
• Laura Andrews, Bream Bay College, Ruakaka  - $2,500 Scholarship

15 Highly Commended Awards were also awarded to shortlisted applicants who received “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Steven Covey.
