Whangarei’s increasingly popular Artisans’ Fairs under the Victoria Canopy will kick off a summer of events at the Town Basin on 24 November.

Whangarei’s increasingly popular Artisans’ Fairs under the Victoria Canopy will kick off a summer of events at the Town Basin on 24 November  – and this year the market will be more protected from the weather.

“Council is making great efforts to ensure that the new wind diffuser will be on the bridge in time for the start of the season,” said Artisans’ Fair operator Kaari Schlebach.

Contracts have been let for the $200,000 windbreak, and the steel ribs that will hold the polycarbonate sheets are currently being installed. Local companies Stainless Steel Projects, Macsway Scaffolding, Steve Bowling contracting, Metro Glass, HB architects, Griffiths and Associates and Richardson Stevens will be completing the project.

“Weavers, carvers, growers, designers, painters, potters, jewelers, printers, sewers, knitters, florists, musicians, performers, dancers, cultural groups, closet artists, creative and clever people, all are invited to come along and be part of a positive and growing community event.

“We will have a market every Saturday from 24 November, gradually building up to a massive December and Christmas Market on 22 December.  The markets held over summer will reflect a celebration of our local Northland culture - children, youth, families and our Mãori heritage.   Anyone wishing to participate in these events in any way, please get in touch.” Mrs Schlebach said.

“This season, we will also work at improving our communication through social media, radio advertising, signs and bookmarks - so look out for all of these things.

“A heartfelt thanks to those who have worked behind the scenes to bring this event together.  We are looking forward to sharing a positive, sunny and dry season of community and culture in the Town Basin this summer,” she said.
