The Victoria Canopy Bridge in the centre of the Town Basin makes a great location for a wide range of daytime activities.

“We are keen to see it becoming a focal point for activities in the years to come, so anyone who has an idea is welcome to give us a call and talk through options,” said WDC Property Officer Jenny Calder.

“It’s an open, accessible, highly visible and central location to use as the base for an event. It has eight powerpoints, three taps, a roof, wind break and tie-down spots.

“The bridge is the main walkway from one side of the Basin to the other, so there are lots of foot traffic. There are toilets, an ATM machine, places to eat and shop in the Town Basin without having to cross busy roads.  People can enjoy the wider environment including the heritage trail walkway, art trail and a wander down to the Wave and Waka – quite a lot of added value for events on the bridge.

“We can be flexible about things like closing times for the toilets in the shopping area if events are carrying on into the evening, and the booking fee is very low. Really it’s just a matter of talking to us and seeing how we can make it work for you,” Ms Calder said.

“We also like to provide a range of other practical tips, such as the simplest way to get gear on and off the bridge, where to park and so on.”

Within a short walk of the bridge you will find:

  • An ATM machine  located near the Visitor Information Centre
  • Public toilets beside the carpark between the Bach and the back of Burning Issues
  • The Heritage Walkway and Art Trail
  • The District’s most popular children’s playground
  • A public barbecue
  • The mobility swing
  • Whangarei Art Muesum
  • Eateries
  • Cafes
  • Shops
  • Reyburn House Art Gallery

You can also enjoy a quick walk  to:

  • Riverside Park (along Riverside Drive)
  • the Aquatic Centre
  • the mangrove boardwalk along the Hatea River
  • the beginning of the Walkway up to Mair Park, AH Reid Memorial Park and Whangarei Falls.
