LOWER HUTT

Last year it was the Night Market – this year, shoppers can experience an all-day market smack bang in the middle of Lower Hutt’s CBD.

Starting in December, Margaret St will be closed to traffic and transformed into an outdoor market. From noon to 8.30pm, stallholders and local shops will be selling their wares, and there will be food, music and other entertainment.

The Margaret St Market will be just the tonic for people doing their Christmas shopping, or wanting to experience something outside the ordinary, says operator James Liu.

James, who is running the market on behalf of the council, says a lot was learnt from last year’s night market, leading to some big changes.

“The night market’s location – in Laings Rd – was too far removed from the CBD. Margaret St is much more accessible to people working in the CBD, visiting Westfield or coming home from work.

“Being open for most of the day, not just in the evenings, will mean more foot traffic.

“And holding the market in the summer months should make for a much more pleasant atmosphere.”

James says they’ve deliberately shortened the market to 10 consecutive Thursdays, to make the most of the warmer weather. It will also provide a great destination for people looking for creative Christmas presents or a day’s browsing over the holiday period.
