WELLINGTON CITY

Dust off your flares and get along to Tawa Pool for our free 70s pool party next Saturday (17 November).

We'll be celebrating the official reopening of the pool, which has been closed since October last year for a major overhaul and earthquake-strengthening.

At 1.30pm Mayor Celia Wade-Brown will open the pool, and then the fun starts - right through until 5.30pm. There'll be prizes for best 70s outfit, a sausage sizzle, face painting, games and competitions. You can also watch local artist Xoe Hall and six helpers paint a 19m mural near the pool and skatepark.

The Council's Recreation Manager, Julian Todd, says "a huge thank you" to Tawa Pool customers for their patience.

"The strengthening work was more involved and took longer than we anticipated, but it's worth the wait. As well as upgrading the pool facilities, we have future-proofed the building against tougher engineering standards, giving the community a safer and better place to swim."

The work included a new roof, steel beams to strengthen the rest of the building, an acoustic ceiling, vapour barrier, resurfaced floors, new window bays and improved access to the mezzanine floor.

Getting to Tawa Pool on foot or by bike just got easier, with the new pedestrian crossing over the railway line joining two sections of Te Ara Tawa, the walking and cycling path.
