WELLINGTON CITY

Wellington showed its best face for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall today, with thousands of people lining the route of the waterfront walkabout.

Charles and Camilla were joined by Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown and Deputy Mayor Ian McKinnon on the walk from Taranaki Wharf to Frank Kitts Park, which featured the first jumps from the new jumping platform, live painting, a double waka salute and paddle-boarders.

"Thousands of Wellingtonians gave Prince Charles and Camilla a day to remember," says Mayor Wade-Brown. "With Happy Birthday resounding along the waterfront it was a magnificent day to celebrate the Prince's birthday.

"The harbour provided the perfect backdrop for the Diamond Jubilee Tour, especially with our two waka accompanying the royal party with salutes along the way.

"It was a great first impression for the Duchess of Cornwall, who enjoyed her first visit to Wellington and the wonderful reception she received, and the Water Whirler turned on a well-timed whirl for them both.

"Wellingtonians of all ages and backgrounds turned out today, from the smallest babies through to people in wheelchairs, many students and the veterans who appreciated meeting the Prince and Duchess," says the Mayor.

Ian McKinnon says the warm weather ensured an enthusiastic reception.

"Wellington, as it always does, hosted our very special guests with warmth and enthusiasm, supported by the wonderful Wellington weather that showcased our sparkling Capital city," he said.
