NZPA - A pedestrian is dead after she was hit by a bus in peak-hour morning traffic on Auckland's North Shore.

Police said the accident happened in Wairau Rd near Westlake Girls High School about 8am and was likely to cause serious traffic disruption.

Road closures were likely and police advised motorists to avoid the area.

Police said they would not release details of the person until they had spoken to relatives.

The road layout has recently been redesigned to allow buses better access to the new bus station on the northern motorway heading into central Auckland.
