Further road closures in Ruapehu District

CENTRAL PLATEAU

Conditions continue to worsen in the central North Island around Mt Ruapehu.

The Desert Road remains closed. Further confirmed closures are SH1 from Taihape to Waiouru, SH49 from Waiouru to Ohakune, SH4 from the intersection of SH49 through to National Park.

Incident type: road closure updates

Further to the closure of SH4 between SH49 and National Park - SH4 is now closed from Raetihi through to National Park.
Turangi Police report sleet and snow on SH47, the stretch of highway from National Park to Tokaanu. This area should also be avoided where possible

SH4 from Raetihi to National Park has now been reopened however considerable care is still advised in this area.
SH1 between Taihape and Rangipo (Desert Road) remains closed until further notice

Location of incident: SH49/SH1 Ruapehu District

Incident type: roads reopening

SH49 from Ohakune to Waiouru, and SH1 from Waiouru to Taihape are both now open to traffic. Continued caution is still required driving through these areas
