DANNEVIRKE

Resource consent has been granted for the Dannevirke Viking icon making the long awaited project a reality for its supporters.

Council’s manager environmental services Mike Brown said that commissioner Rob van Voorthuysen had considered District Plan provisions, potential adverse effects, safety aspects and amenity values in making his decision. The consent also comes with 10 conditions including construction, height and lighting constraints.

For members of the Dannevirke Promotion and Development Society fundraising can now begin and they plan to leave no stone unturned to find the $280,000 the project requires.

“But there will be no burden on ratepayers,” chairman Malcolm Peffers is quick to assure the community.

The 10 metre high reinforced glass icon will be the work of Wellington sculptor Denis Hall who is incorporating staff from WETA Workshop to assist.

Leasehold arrangements for the railway land owned by Ontrack must now proceed along with a building consent application, Mr Brown said.
