Specialist Navy and Police dive squads commenced further searching operations on Lake Wanaka this morning looking for missing helicopter pilot Morgan Saxton or any further sign of wreckage from this Robinson R22 helicopter he was flying.
Wanaka Police Search and Rescue Co-ordinator Sergeant Aaron Nicholson said that the past three days have focused on the surface and shore line searches with the hope that Mr Saxton may have survived the crash. However we will now be concentrating our efforts beneath the water.
The Navy and Police dive teams have some specialist sonar and other remote searching capability which they will be employed over the next few days' Nicholson said.
The dive squads were flown to Wanaka by RNZAF Hercules last night and were on Lake Wanaka at 4.00am this morning.
Sergeant Nicholson said that Police will monitor the dive team's efforts to day and will update the family as to any significant developments that may occur.
