PALMERSTON

In an unfolding incident near Palmerston, police have closed SH1 and have cordons and checks on nearby roads.
A police car was fired at near Oamaru this afternoon after police challenged a vehicle of interest to stop about 2pm.
The Landrover, believed to be stolen, had been heading south on SH1 but then turned and headed north. It has since stopped just north of Palmerston on Horse Range Rd.
A man and a woman with two young children and with what is believed to be a shot gun, were last seen heading off over paddocks.
Police advise residents of Palmerston to stay indoors and secure their properties until further notice from police. Schools and local residents have been advised.
