State Highway One near the Wellington CBD was closed for an hour and a half from just prior to midnight Wednesday night, after a male fell to his death on the road.

The 38yr old Wellington man had climbed along a large concrete beam that crosses over the motorway near Buller Street when he fell on to the road in the North bound lane of the motorway.

Upon learning of the man's presence on the beam, Police had closed the road to traffic, however the man was killed instantly when he fell.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man's death, and the matter will be referred to the Coroner.
