The body of a young female has been formally identified as that of missing teenager Olivia Rutherford.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell says preliminary findings suggest that, although an absolute tragedy, there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this death.
The matter is likely to be referred to the Coroner and therefore any comments relating to circumstances cannot be made at this time. The post mortem examination will take place tomorrow.
Mr Borrell added that Olivia's family wished to thank the public for their assistance and messages of support. He also added that the family has now specifically requested privacy to enable them to deal with their loss.
Local Maori kaumatua has blessed the area where Olivia was found. As part of cultural protocol they ask people to be respectful of Olivia's family and avoid using or fishing from Chaffers Wharf if possible, between now until Friday.
