BLACKCAPS pace man Tim Southee has been named as one of the most sexy men in sport.
Southee has featured in the first gallery for the Sexiest Men in Sport on Yahoo!Xtra. The website finds the 50 sexiest men in sport, before short listing the group and opening up voting to the public.
The website recently did the same poll for sportswomen, with White Ferns captain Aimee Watkins coming second.
21 year old Southee, who has played nine Tests, 31 ODIs and 16 Twenty20 internationals for the BLACKCAPS said he was surprised by his selection along side the likes of football legend David Beckham, All Black first five Dan Carter, surfing stalwart Kelly Slater and fellow cricketer Michael Clarke.
“Sexy sportsman? You sure they’ve got the right person!” Southee laughed. “I never really considered myself a pretty boy. I’m just a country boy and haven’t paid much attention to my looks.”
But he said it’s nice to be acknowledged next to some of the most recognised sportsmen in the world. “It’s great to be along side some of the greats of sport,” he said. “This could be the only category I could be put along side those guys, so that’s a good way of looking at it.”
Yahoo!Xtra sports editor Mike Kilpatrick said Southee seems to be a favourite with the ladies. “New Zealand’s famous rugby players and cricketers are sure to do well in the final rundown. Southee, in particular, seems a favourite with both the female cricket going public and the female staff in the Yahoo!Xtra office,” he said. “His cheeky smile and sporting ability easily got him into the top 50.”
Southee could possibly have some competition from some other famous New Zealand cricketers. “Keep your eyes peeled over the coming weeks as there is sure to be another couple of BLACKCAPS making the list,” Kilpatrick said, not letting slip who it might be.
Southee had an opinion on who his competition could be. “Brendon McCullum fancies himself as a pretty boy and Kyle Mills has done some stuff for Barkers recently so I’d pick those two,” he concluded.
