Hyperbaric oxygen treatment can be highly valuable in raising oxygen levels in blood plasma, leading to greater amounts of the life-sustaining substance being delivered to the brain, organs and body tissues.

In a first for New Zealand, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy will be offered in a new clinic in Ponsonby from August. Hypo2 provides hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments within a pressurised chamber that uses micron-filtered ambient air and an oxygen concentrator to deliver oxygen to the body safely.

Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy can improve the physical healing process and cellular function. It is recommended for sportspeople (aiding recovery from sporting injuries, promoting re-conditioning and enhancing endurance); for people who have had recent surgery (decreases swelling and bruising associated with surgery); and in the treatment of a number of conditions, including autism, ADD and ADHD. It has had successful application in chronic fatigue syndrome, recovery from stroke, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy.

The oxygen chamber provides a relaxing environment for a 60-minute treatment. Once the chamber is fully pressurised, you can listen to music, read a book or magazine, or simply snooze. Once the treatment is complete, you may carry on your day as normal.

Hypo2 New Zealand director Felice Broom says that in order to feel energized and to optimise metabolic processes, the body requires good oxygen intake and delivery.

“Hypo2 can assist with this by increasing oxygen levels in areas of the body that would otherwise be difficult to reach. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment allows the body to utilise oxygen more efficiently and improves healing, health and fitness. The benefits for cell function, and the potential boost in production of stem cells and new cell growth present significant potential for alleviating the symptoms and effects of a number of diseases, disorders and injuries.”

When it comes to athletes, even the most novice can get the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. “At our clinics in Australia we have found that athletes tend to use this therapy in two ways: as an additional element to their training programme to improve endurance and speed post-event recovery, or to support and increase the healing process after an injury,” Mrs Broom says.

For sports injuries, the recommended course of treatment involves using the oxygen chamber within 24 hours of the injury occurring. Depending on the nature and severity of the injury, protocol is individually recommended, often in conjunction with specialist consultation.

Hypo2 will have an official opening night on Monday 27 July at its new clinic on Cowan Street in Ponsonby.
Note:

Increased oxygen concentration levels in the blood plasma helps to reduce hypoxic areas (suboptimal oxygen for function) of the body to improve the metabolic function of cells, support and strengthen immune response and enhance normal healing processes. Additionally, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to increase the volume of stem cells circulating in the body. Stem cells have the ability to modify their form to assist in the repair and recovery of a variety of injured tissues, including those in the brain.

Increased oxygen tissue concentrations cause blood vessels to constrict, which can decrease regional blood flow. In hyperbaric oxygen therapy, decreased regional blood flow is compensated by the increased plasma oxygen that reaches tissue. This process creates a net effect in reduced tissue inflammation without creating hypoxia (inadequate oxygen levels for normal function). This mechanism is believed to be why hyperbaric oxygen therapy can improve post operative recovery, compartment and compression based injury. As an adjunctive treatment it can support and increase the healing rate of soft tissue and bone injuries.

About Hypo2 – Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Established in 2004, Hypo2 provides mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy within a chamber environment. The method increases oxygen intake by exposing the body to oxygen at a higher than normal atmospheric pressure. The therapy aids relaxation, stimulates the body’s healing processes, increases stamina and endurance and also helps the body to return to a state of balance and wellbeing. Hypo2 has two clinics in Sydney and opened its first New Zealand clinic in Ponsonby, Auckland in August 2009. For more information, visit www.hypo2.com.au
