Councillors want to gauge public support for this landscape design option for the Council-owned land at 2 High Street next to the Taylor River amphitheatre.

Local architect Tim Barton has drawn up a plan that retains a flat area at road level in High Street while allowing for a gentle gradient of public green space and a walkway down to the Taylor River’s edge.

Councillors are satisfied that the design complies with the Council’s Urban Design Strategy and will help connect pedestrian movement between the town centre and the riverside.

However, this design option is estimated to cost about $650,000 to develop so a commercial tenant would be required on the site to fund the landscaping.

It’s not something the Council has allocated funding to at this time so a commercial lease would be needed before this could go ahead, said Mayor Alistair Sowman.

  • Send in your comments to MDC Projects Manager Jamie Lyall at Marlborough District Council or by email to Jamie.lyall@marlborough.govt.nz before Tuesday 10 April 2012 .

Details, such as the maximum dimensions of a building footprint, will be available when the Council publicly advertises for expressions of interest in the site. It is intended that the opportunity would be advertised outside Marlborough.
