Waitaki District Council presents a free public seminar on maintaining farm productivity and profits in an uncertain climate.
Waitaki District Council is pleased to welcome internationally renowned climate change scientist Dr. Jim Salinger and business commentator Rod Oram to Oamaru on 12:00-2:00pm, Monday, 10 October to discuss the latest information on climate change and its impact on New Zealand and Waitaki farming and communities. This free seminar, hosted at the Oamaru Opera House, Ink Box, Thames Street, will cover the following issues:
Rod Oram will present material from Professor Caroline Saunders illustrating what climate change means for agricultural trade and what practical and cost-effective steps farmers can take in reducing their emissions whilst improving their economic viability and business opportunities in a changing world. The session will also discuss emissions trading impact on the New Zealand economy and compare New Zealand's climate change targets with trading partner targets.
Jim Salinger is based at the University of Auckland. He was the lead author for the intergovernmental panel on climate change which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Professor Caroline Saunders, Lincoln University has produced over a hundred publications specializing in sustainable development and agriculture. Her current research includes evaluating trade and the environment including the assessment of international market policies and their impact on agricultural development. Rod Oram is an award winning financial and business journalist and Radio New Zealand/Sunday Start Times commentator. He has commented widely on the Emissions Trading Scheme, climate change and pressures on trade.
