Thirty-eight third year Sport and Recreation degree students currently on work placements are gaining hands on experience as well as making a positive impact in our the local community, across a wide range of occupations.
Bay of Plenty Polytechnic student, Brennan Barnett-Mullan, is working three days a week at the Cardiac Clinic helping patients in cardiac rehabilitation. “I take technical readings for blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation, providing support to people with life threatening conditions and helping them through a difficult time in their life,” says Brennan.
The placement has confirmed Brennan’s interest in health. “I’m learning everything, my plans are to carry on with postgraduate study in this area and there is a possibility I can return and work at Cardiac Clinic in the future.”
Meanwhile student Teegan Schneller is, in her own words, already working in her dream job, having secured a placement as an event manager for the Waikato / Bay of Plenty Magic. Teegan ensures all of the Magic home games run to an exact schedule. “I’m learning about what it takes to run a successful event,” says Teegan. “The games are on TV so everything has to run perfectly with Sky.”
As a netballer Teegan takes great delight in telling the young players they have won the ball delivery competition. “Seeing the look on the faces of the young girls I take onto the court to meet the BOP Magic players is such a great feeling.”
Teegan’s passion for the role is clear to see. “It’s so fun! I’m really enjoying networking, meeting different people and bringing them all together for one thing. When you see all of the people enjoying the game it is the best feeling.” Teegan is hoping an opening will come up next year when she graduates so that she can continue doing what she loves.
These Bay of Plenty Polytechnic students are just two of the highly motivated year group who are making a positive difference in their communities. They will graduate in December with Bachelor of Sport and Recreation and exciting futures ahead of them.
