Hamilton City Council will mark the first anniversary of the Canterbury earthquake with a two-minute silence in the city’s Civic Square at 12.51pm.
Hamilton Julie Hardaker said it was important Hamilton and its community showed solidarity with the people of Canterbury during what will be an emotional and difficult time for many of them.
“Many people in Hamilton have been affected by Canterbury’s ongoing earthquakes, and as a city we want to show them they are not forgotten,” Mayor Hardaker said.
Mayor Hardaker has sent a letter of condolence to Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker, and she encouraged Hamiltonians, particularly those who work or study in the city centre, to attend tomorrow’s event.
The New Zealand flag above the Council building will be flown at half-mast tomorrow in honour of the Canterbury residents who lost their lives during the February 22, 2011, earthquake.
