A temporary alcohol ban will be in place in Sumner during the New Year’s Eve celebrations, from 7pm Monday 31 December through to 7am Tuesday 1 January.

This temporary, one-off ban is to supplement the existing, three-day permanent alcohol ban that is in force from 7pm Thursday to midnight Sunday. New Year’s Eve 2012 is on a Monday and it falls outside the existing permanent ban period.

The Council approved, by resolution, the temporary alcohol ban in the Council-owned public spaces bounded by Scarborough Beach, the Esplanade and Heberden Avenue, from Marriner Street to the Sumner Boat Ramp. This is the same area as the existing permanent alcohol ban. The ban does not apply to privately-owned places.

The report to the Council stated that police are in favour of imposing a ban for Sumner on New Year’s Eve as they consider that alcohol-related disorder is very likely to occur on that day unless the area has an alcohol ban in place.

Signs will be displayed in the ban area advising of the temporary ban.

The primary role of Alcohol Ban Areas is to act as a deterrent to people drinking alcohol in public places that are under the control of the Council and open to the public.
