EXCLUSIVE @ INFONEWS.CO.NZ & NEWSTALK ZB: It has been released that the New Plymouth District Council could put Taranaki's beachcomber Eric Brewer into prison for up to three years and fined up to $250,000 if the New Plymouth District Council takes him to court for living in a hut on the beach.

Lawyer Aimee McGowan says any potential penalties will depend on the kind of legislation the Council may decide to use.

The council has dismantled the dwelling Eric Brewer has been living in for 16 years at Tapuae Beach , claiming he breached the Reserves Act and a Council bylaw.

"There is the possibility of court action, however I think there is going to be a lot of to-ing and fro-ing before they go into any kind of court battles over this."

Aimee McGowan believes Brewer has also breached the Marine Reserves Act.

However the New Plymouth public feel enough is enough and he should be left alone.

Over 5000 people  have liked a Facebook page in support of Eric Brewer and that is two times more likes then the New Plymouth Councils Facebook page which has been on Facebook for over four years.

"It is sad that the council isnt listening to us, I can tell you now. Come elections time there will be a big change" said one resident.
