A hard-working solo mother of two daughters, one with special needs, says that winning a year’s worth of bread and milk will change her family’s life after a house fire destroyed their home late last year.

Upper Hutt resident Sarah Packer entered the Muffin Break Win a Year’s Worth of Bread and Milk competition at Muffin Break Queensgate while out with her mother.

Entrants were required to buy a Gourmet Tartlet and Coffee combo at Muffin Break, and share what they would do with the extra five minutes they could save by winning the free staple pantry items. Winners were those that provided the most creative or interesting response.

For 46-year-old Sarah, that was to “unhurriedly do a wooden puzzle with my special needs daughter and count my blessings!”

“You never think you will win something like this,” says Sarah. “You put your entry in because there is just that little bit of hope.”

When told she was the North Island winner of the prize, valued at over $800, Sarah says she jumped up and down with excitement. “This is life-changing stuff for us, it’s incredible,” she says. “It’s like winning Lotto for me, it means that much, because this is the basic stuff that you need every day.”

The win has particular significance for Sarah, who is not only a mum to Megan, eight, but also a full-time caregiver for her seven-year-old daughter Emily who has global developmental delays and is non-verbal due to a unique chromosomal disorder.

Their lives were turned upside down in December last year, when a house fire destroyed their home just weeks before Christmas. “It has been a pretty haphazard and brutal year, to be honest, so this is so exciting and wonderful.”

“The savings that I will be able to make on bread and milk mean I can give my girls such a good Christmas this year, and spend that little bit of extra time with them both. Winning this is just the best thing – it’s not even the icing on the cake, it’s the whole party!”

The Muffin Break Win a Year’s Worth of Bread and Milk competition gave away two of the high-value prize packages – one in the South Island and one in the North Island – which include two loaves of Nature’s Fresh bread and two 2 litre bottles of Meadow Fresh Milk per week for 52 weeks.
