New, artisan craft and food market with a difference, “The Village Market” is opening with a friendly, family focused weekend on Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th October.
The market, situated at 46 Wainui Road showcase’s the city’s brightest and best artisan producers in a permanent site, formerly the old Transfield Truck Depot, across from the old Griffins factory.

Creator of the market, Laurie Sanders bought the site at auction some months ago and has since been developing the space alongside his daughter, artist Johanna Sanders as a weekend destination for the whole family to enjoy.  Features include safe play spaces and bikes to ride for children as well as jigger train and a special mama lounge with comfortable couches and access to hot water for bottles and changing spaces.

Creative visionary and upcycle enthusiast Laurie Sanders has big plans for the space – each permanent stall space is completely rain-proof and made out of recycled pallets – any stallholder having worked a winter season in the rain, will be delighted to move to a dryer environment.  “The market is on rain or shine, we’ve made sure our stallholders will be warm and dry in challenging weather and we’re also developing one of the buildings on site as an indoor space for artists and creators with delicate wares for sale as well as other outside spaces to suit most selling situations."

As a full weekend market, Friday will be themed as feast night with delicious cuisine on offer and heart-warming entertainment.  Saturday and Sunday are focused on creative crafts and organic gourmet foods accompanied by lively and talented buskers.

Market goers coming to The Village Market can expect to see a wide range on offer including market favourite Apple Quarters who have signed up a permanent space offering their gluten free, gourmet sausages, soft cheeses and yoghurt.

“The market is an evolving work in progress – each week you come, there’ll be something different you won’t have seen before” says Laurie.  It’s all about fun and family and we’re looking forward to seeing you there!

The Village Market opens on Saturday 11th October from 9am-3pm.  Regular hours are then Fridays 3-11pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 9am-3pm at 46 Wainui Road, Lower Hutt.
