Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. The problem is global and is steadily affecting many low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings. The prevalence has increased at an alarming rate. Globally, in 2013 the number of overweight children under the age of five was estimated to be over 42 million. [1]

The 2012/13 New Zealand Health Survey found that 1 in 9 children (aged 2–14 years) were obese (11%) and a further 1 in 5 children were overweight (22%). [2]

Add to that the scary statistic that approximately 50% of all toddlers are fussy eaters and you can see that, in NZ, we have a problem.

80% of all New Zealand parents worry that their child’s eating habits aren’t healthy.
35% of New Zealand parents feel concerned about the amount their child eats.[3]

Due to constantly changing lifestyles people are becoming busier and convenience foods are more desirable, however they aren’t always a good choice. The increase in these convenience foods means our diets are becoming high in refined sugars, e-numbers and other nasty ingredients. A lot of kids are hooked and it’s playing havoc with their health.

So, how can you make sure your kids are getting the right nutrition through their all-important growth stage?

Kiwi firm, Complete Kids Nutrition is passionate about making a difference and helping you as parents. They want to change the way kids perceive healthy foods and snacks and give parents the peace of mind that they are feeding them something genuinely healthy.

Complete Kids Nutrition was launched in October 2013 by parents of one (Tyla, 7), Megan & Todd. They developed a nutritionally balanced and great-tasting snack product with the help of a panel of children.  It’s a healthy, tasty superfood milkshake range.

Since their launch in 2013 they have helped thousands of kiwi kids and parents and are now looking to take the business to the next level. They have interest from Australia and are looking to raise funds to increase penetration in NZ and enter into the Australian market.

They have already put over half a million dollars (NZ$500,000) of their own money into this project and are now looking to raise $50,000 through Kiwi-based crowdfunding site – PledgeMe.

If you would like to help Megan & Todd with their dream to get kids off junk food, then you can pledge your support www.pledgeme.co.nz/projects/3846-complete-kids-nutrition-help-us-get-kids-off-junk-food.

The campaign closes the 28th August 2015.

Background info & Facts

Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. The problem is global and is steadily affecting many low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings. The prevalence has increased at an alarming rate. Globally, in 2013, the number of overweight children under the age of five is estimated to be over 42 million.

Close to 31 million of these are living in developing countries.

Overweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and are more likely to develop non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age. Unhealthy weight and obesity, as well as their related diseases, are largely preventable. Prevention of childhood obesity therefore needs to be a high priority.

The fundamental causes behind the rising levels of childhood obesity are; a shift in diet towards an increased intake of energy-dense foods high in fat and sugars but low in vitamins, minerals and other healthy micronutrients, and a trend towards decreased levels of physical activity. [1]
