We have all become increasingly aware of how important it is to enrol pre-school children at a kindergarten as a way to ensure that their passage into school is made that much easier. At the Auckland Kindergarten Association they encourage families to place their child’s name on their preferred kindergarten’s waiting list at approximately two years of age.

Waiting lists vary from kindergarten to kindergarten and some families may need to wait until there is space, or their child may be able to start kindergarten immediately, because children continually graduate to school, and sometimes move house, so vacancies do arise regularly.

Unlike schools, Auckland Kindergarten Association kindergartens are not zoned, so families can enrol their child at the kindergarten of their choice.  They encourage you to visit your local kindergartens, talk with the teaching team and experience the centre in action before you decide which centre best suits your child and family needs.  You are welcome to pop in and say hi anytime. For those who would like to read the Education Review Office’s (ERO) report on their local kindergartens, these are available on the local centre pages of the AKA website.

Most kindergartens offer full day sessions (either 6 or 6.5 hours).  However, in some kindergartens a shorter 3 or 4 hour session is offered.  Parents can choose the sessions and days that their child will attend, and can refer to the local kindergarten pages on www.aka.org.nz for hours available at the centre of their choice.

So, how to enrol your child at kindergarten? First, parents must complete a waiting list form for the kindergarten they choose. This can be done on a form online or you may prefer to visit your local kindergarten and complete the enrolment form in person. This is also a good opportunity to meet the teaching team and to see the kindergarten environment and programme.  When a space becomes available, the centre will contact you to discuss a start date for your child at kindergarten. The next step is to complete an Enrolment Form and then your child will be all set to start at kindergarten and to join in the fun and learning.
