CHRISTCHURCH

Rangi Ruru student, Sarah Lawrence, has been recognised for her problem solving skills at the Future Problem Solving Program International Conference at Michigan State University, in Michigan, USA.

The Year 10 student competed in the week-long event (June 1-5) in both the individual and team scenario writing competitions and has just returned home.

Participating in the middle division, Sarah placed 4th for her individual scenario writing and 2nd in the scenario writing team competition where she was paired with teammates from Singapore, California and Iowa.

‘Energy of the Future’ was the theme for the conference which Sarah believes is a very relevant topic for young people to explore.

“The topic was something I know quite a bit about and I enjoyed it because it gave me creative license to express my views.” Sarah says. “One of the best parts of the competition was the chance to meet new people from so many different parts of the world. Everyone was really friendly and it was a great experience.”

Rangi Ruru’s Philosophy teacher, Jay Sloss says the chance for Sarah to use her skills in an international context has been invaluable.

“Sarah is a very critical thinker and to participate in an international event of this scale is remarkable. The intellectual calibre of the participants is outstanding and it is most impressive that Sarah has placed so highly. We are all immensely proud of her,” he says. “We also must credit Sarah’s tutor and mentor, Sue Williams for the time and expertise she always puts in to working with our girls.”
