New Zealand has won 12 medals on day one of the 2016 ITK Taekwon-Do World Cup in Budapest, Hungary.

The tournament is the largest ever held in the world with over 1800 competitors representing 56 nations, however New Zealand entrants came away with success including two gold medals.

The oldest competitor from New Zealand Kerry McEvoy from World Class Taekwon-Do, Auckland at 52 years-old won gold in the , individual 4th-6th Dan Male Patterns (45+) while the other gold was won by Angel McCreedy-Pilcher (Paul M Club, Papakura) in the individual 1st Dan Female Pattern (18-35years).

Silver medals went to Levin’s Dany Yates in the individual 1st Dan Male Pattern (12-14 years), Matt Bowden (SCTA, Palmerston North), individual 2nd Dan male Pattern (15-17 years) and Anita Broczek from the Legacy Club in Petone in the 1st Dan Senior Female Pattern (18-35 years).

New Zealand competitors also gained seven bronze medals for their performances on the opening day including the oldest Kiwi female athlete, Missy Thompson aged 48 from the Calibre Club on the Hauraki Plains for the individual Blue and Red Belt Female Pattersn (45 + years).

Requirements at the World Cup mean that New Zealand athletes are representing their club rather than their nation. However all of the Kiwi athletes know they will be watched carefully after they won the overall team category at the World Championships in Italy last year.

The sixth Taekwon-Do world cup is being held 11-16 October in Budapest, Hungary.
