Viva Expeditions are specialists in travel to Latin America, offering small group expeditions and custom made tours to Latin America, and one of their very popular tours is to the highlands of Ecuador. Here their guests stay in beautiful

lodges and historic haciendas, a much more unique way of seeing the country than staying at normal hotels. The lucky people who choose this option will enjoy the Avenue of the Volcanoes, marvelling at the snow-capped peaks that seem to touch the sky, and experiencing the culture and lifestyle of people living in the countryside of Ecuador. This exceptional tour will afford travellers the culture combination of history, scenery and unique luxury.

This very special six day tour begins in Quito where the first day is given over to a city tour, visiting multiple palaces and churches, and a drive to the ‘Middle of the World’ where the 30m tall monument built by the French-Spanish geodetic expedition of 1736-1744 which determined the position of the equator. Visitors can stand with one leg on the northern and the other on the southern hemisphere of the earth. That night is spent in the beautiful Hacienda Cusin in Otavalo.

The next day is spent in Otavalo, the site of one of South America’s most famous Indian markets, offering a huge selection of woven tapestries, blankets, hand-knit sweaters, pottery and other souvenirs, and that night is spent in the small mountain village of Papallacta, famous for its hot springs. Next afternoon visitors will journey along a scenic stretch of road taking them to the majestic Mountain Cotopaxi and the National Park, stopping at the Limpiopungo Lake and reaching the Hacienda Alegria where they will spend the night.

After breakfast the next day visitors are introduced into the spirit of the Andean Haciendas and their daily workings, visiting the grounds before a two hour horseback ride along old cobblestone roads and trails leading to the great viewpoint of La Viudita which overlooks the entire valley. After a typical lunch hosted by the Hacienda owner, is an exciting demonstration by the Chagras on their riding and working skills. On the sixth day travellers are transferred to the International Airport at Quito for their international flight.

This fabulous trip includes five nights first class accommodation, five breakfasts, four lunches and four dinners and all transport and sightseeing as outlined in the tour itinerary. Prices are based on minimum number of two passengers travelling and the itinerary can be tailored or extended to suit individual requirements.
