The DriveSouth Otago Rally is the first round of the 2017 New Zealand Rally Championship. The rally is always an event which is anticipated by many on the calendar, including local accommodation provider Dunedin Palms Motel.

“The rally represents much of what Otago is about – a little bit of ruggedness but great entertainment with high-profile people and settings. We are truly excited for the next edition of the rally to come this year” says Dunedin Palms Motel owner Karen Greenan.

The event has grown massively since its first edition in 1997. 2016’s event saw Hyundai WRC star Hayden Paddon emerge victorious and the Classic Rally go to WRC stars Markko Martin and Stephane Prevot

The rally has no trouble in attracting worldwide names. In recent years, the Otago Classic Rally has attracted former World Rally Champions Miki Biasion, Ari Vatanen, Juha Kankkunen, Hannu Mikkola and Bjorn Waldegard, as well as international stars Pasi Hagstrom, Piero Liatti, Jimmy and Alister McRae and Alex Fiorio. A strong contingent of Australians has also been regulars at the event over the past 10 years, including Ross Dunkerton, Greg Carr, Geoff Portman and Neal Bates.

The event traditionally starts with a ceremony in Dunedin’s Octagon on the Friday night before the event starts. This is the perfect location for those staying with Dunedin Palms Motel, as the motel is just an 8-minute walk from the Octagon.

“Our location makes it easy for those wanting to attend the opening ceremony, and then stages of the rally. Being centralised makes our motel also very accessible for Dunedin’s nightlife during the period of the rally” says Karen.

Features of the Otago Rally include:

Ceremonial start in Dunedin's Octagon on Friday night

  • 2 day rally, 16 special stages covering approximately 285km. Saturday and Sunday's stage are all daylight.
  • All stages are gravel surface on both public and forestry roads, except for the tarmac “Super Special” stage, run in front of a large crowd in central Dun
  • The rally is based in Dunedin.
  • Favourite stages include ‘Kuri Bush’, ‘Whare Flat’, ‘Macintosh Rd’, and ‘Waipori Gorge’ (described by former British Rally Champion, Russell Brookes, as one of the best stages he had ever competed on).

Dunedin Palms Motel is a 4.5-star motel and their dedication to providing quality service and comfort at a reasonable price is what sets them apart from any other accommodation provider. Add to this the centralised location and there is a combination which is perfect for any corporate traveller. Book today via www.dunedinpalmsmotel.co.nz for the best rates available.
