A smoke alarm will work only as well as it is fitted, and will only work as long as it is maintained, and some statistics may surprise you. "Nationally 80 per cent of homes now own smoke alarms but in 12% of house fires attended by fire and rescue services the smoke alarm failed to work, mainly due to flat or missing batteries" - source: UK 'Firekills' campaign.

RTA smoke alarm requirements state that landlords must have the right type of smoke alarms installed in the right places to meet new regulations which came into force on 1 July 2016. All new or replacement smoke alarms must be long-life photoelectric smoke alarms with a battery life of at least eight years that meet the required product standards, or a hard-wired smoke alarm system. Both landlords and tenants now have responsibilities to keep smoke alarms working. Never damage, remove or disconnect a smoke alarm – that includes removing the batteries.

A landlord who fails to comply with smoke alarm obligations is committing an unlawful act and may be liable for a penalty of up to $4,000, while a tenant who fails to comply with their responsibilities may be liable for a penalty of up to $3,000. These regulations apply to any residential rental covered by the Residential Tenancies Act including rental homes, boarding houses and rental caravans, sleep-outs and similar.

G-Force We Install provide a smoke alarm service, particularly to landlords, but also to anyone needing a smoke alarm to be installed, but who haven’t got the time, or are not sure of how to go about it. We Install’s certified assessors will visit your rental property and provide you with a free, no obligation assessment of your current smoke alarms, and each assessment is customised to each individual’s property needs, be it a smoke alarm install, or simple top up or addition.

They will then provide an obligation free quote, to supply and install the smoke

alarms, and once the quote is accepted, they will arrange the supply and installation of smoke alarms by certified professionals. Once the installation is complete, they will provide the landlord with a Certificate of Compliance stating that the property meets the required standard for smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms are proven to save lives by giving those in a fire an early enough alert to safely escape. Some homeowners find installation to be confusing. Many homeowners are unsure about how many alarms are necessary, what kinds are best for their home and where exactly to install them, and G-Force We Install recommend that proper maintenance is just as important as installing them.
