Waikato based Manuka Honey producers SummerGlow Apiaries support the release by the Minstry for Primary Industries of a scientific definition for Manuka Honey.

“The Consumer has been waiting for a long time for this, looking to our government to provide assurance of genuine New Zealand Manuka Honey.  This is a good start, it’s got us all talking and the whole industry headed in the same direction.  We are keen to work with what the Ministry for Primary Industries has put out there,” says James Jeffery, co-owner of SummerGlow Apiaries.

Food Safety Minister David Bennett said the proposed scientific definition would provide an important starting point for the industry to promote New Zealand Manuka Honey in world markets.  This will ensure confidence in the authenticity of genuine New Zealand manuka honey exports overseas, which is one of the first steps leading to a standard for the industry.

The Ministry for Primary Industries said the new regulatory definition contains four chemicals and a DNA marker that when present in honey at specified levels, showed clear evidence that the honey is New Zealand Manuka Honey.

The UMF Honey Association has undertaken its own extensive Manuka Identification science programme over the last five years.  “We look forward to incorporating the perspectives and learnings of our international science team during the six weeks’ review and consultation phase” says the UMF Honey Association General Manager, John Rawcliffe.

Manuka Honey became a highly-revered and sought-after honey following the discovery by the late Dr Peter Molan (Waikato University Honey Research Unit) that Manuka Honey has unique attributes not found in any other honey.

“The UMF grading system measures compounds that are unique to Manuka Honey and not found in honey from other flowers.  For our customers, the UMF grading system assures quality and purity of Manuka Honey”. comments Mr Jeffery.
