Last year another extraordinary Suite Ship was added to the Avalon Waterways fleet, so this month is her first birthday! The Avalon Imagery II is a true haven on the river with two full decks of Panorama Suites with wall-to-wall panoramic windows that transform the living space into a unique open-air balcony. With 200 square feet, Panorama Suites are more than 30% larger than the industry standard, giving guests the unique opportunity to wake each morning to enchanting scenery and fresh breezes. Onboard amenities and services include free Wi-Fi access, a fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, a hair salon, elevator, and a spacious Sky Deck with shade system, whirlpool, deck games, and the delightful Sky Bistro for al-fresco lunches of light grill fare.

The Avalon Imagery II Christening Ceremony was special for the Kiwi market , with the selection of a New Zealand ‘godmother’. She was officially christened on the 5th of April 2016 (European time), and TV news presenter and journalist Judy Bailey was chosen as the godmother. Judy is the first New Zealander to launch an Avalon Waterways ship and the first Kiwi godmother for any vessel in Europe, and the champagne flowed, at the ceremony on the Rhine in Engers, Germany.

Judy added these words; “River cruising is an increasingly popular choice among Kiwi travellers, who are always on the lookout for new travel styles. New Zealanders are passionate travellers so I am especially thrilled to be the first New Zealander to name an Avalon ship. May she bring peace and happiness to all who journey with her.” Judy then blessed the ship in Maori, “May your journey be safe from launch till landing. I bless you with the breath of life.” To be asked to be a godmother is something very different for me and a wonderful honour," Judy said.

The 110m long Avalon Imagery II caters to 128 passengers and is one of 15 Avalon Waterways' Suite Ships , which offers two entire decks of all-suite accommodation and more cabin space than the industry average. The ship will operate primarily on the Rhine, offering an eight-day Romantic Rhine itinerary between Amsterdam and Basel.

River cruising is an increasingly popular style of travel for those looking to explore a region without having to worry about accommodation or itineraries.
