The Vaping Kiwi Says Extensive US Study Reveals Vaping Helping Smokers Quit

Vaping is not the enemy, and should not be lumped in with smoking. It should be seen as a fantastic tool to help people give up smoking. As a smoking cessation tool vaping has proved far more effective than gum, nicotine patches and hypnotherapy combined, and the Maori Party wants vaping subsidised to help smokers quit and several governments, including our own, are considering it.

The latest US study which shows how vaping appears to be helping smokers quit, and has brought about a population-level drop in smoking, calls into question restrictions around e-cigarettes. The extensive study found that vapers were more likely than non-users to try quitting, with rates of 65 per cent versus 40 percent, and more likely to succeed in quitting for at least three months.

There is growing evidence that using e-cigarettes was far less harmful than continuing to smoke tobacco, and University of Auckland Professor of Public Health, Chris Bullen said, “Policy makers in countries contemplating a more restrictive approach to the regulation of e-cigarettes should pause to consider if pursuing such a course of action is the right thing to do for population health”.

Vaping has and will continue to save lives and reduce health issues for people who choose to quit smoking, and it is that imperative council policies around New Zealand do not brand vaping as evil, but as a potential tool to achieve their stated goal of smoking reduction.
