Hard work is nothing new for Amy Huang and it’s the hard work that is paying off for this young Christchurch woman who has recently arrived in the United States to study.

19 year old Amy was the dux at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in 2016 and during her senior year worked closely with Crimson Education’s Career Pathway Advisor based at Rangi, Wen Qiu.

Wen supports the students in their pursuit of tertiary education or experience (including gap year opportunities) and already a number of students have successfully entered arts and academic colleges both in New Zealand and overseas.

Following her work with Wen and a team of mentors and advisors from Crimson Education, Amy Huang received an offer from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and another from Carnegie Mellon University. She also made it to the waiting list for Harvard. Amy will study Fine Arts after choosing RISD as she can cross register her classes against the same offered at Brown University (an Ivy League college).

Wen Qiu says a lot of her work with the Rangi students is about identifying the opportunities and then getting the applications up to the standard required.

“In Amy’s case, Crimson supported her with her test preparation for exams (Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT’s) and so on), and tutored her for those exams. We also helped with the curation of her Portfolio for her arts / NCEA scholarship tutorial, personal statements, supplement essays and interviews for university and scholarship applications,” says Wen. “It’s a big world out there and it can be difficult sorting the options and finding what’s available let alone pulling the applications together.”

Amy left Christchurch in mid-August and plans to study for four to five years, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

“RISD is well known and respected for its arts faculty in fact it is probably the most prestigious University in that area of study so I am thrilled to be here,” Amy says from the US.

Amy knows she will have to work very hard and is grateful for the support from her parents who are also working hard so that she can attend RISD. She will be applying using the necessary procedures, in order to be able to undertake some part-time work in the near future.

“I look at this as an investment in my future,” she says. “I want to do the very best I can and with the help Wen has provided, I am confident I am on my way to achieving that.”

Note: Crimson Consulting’s Wen Qiu is available to any student, whether they are from Rangi Ruru Girls’ or not. Rangi students have access to some of Crimson’s services as part of their school fees. Depending on how much support students want, typically Crimson’s packages start at $200 and upwards, depending on how it is personalised.
