Toi Ohomai’s second year Bachelor of Creative Industries students wowed the public with their creative exhibition, MADE, held at the new Te Ara o Mauao building at the Windermere campus last week.

MADE, which stands for Multiple Art and Design Exhibition, kicked off on 27 September and was visited by 200 people from the local community.

The three day exhibition showcased a range of student artworks, including plywood illustrations, jewellery, portraits, prints, castings and photography.

The works began selling within minutes of opening, with total sales just shy of $5,000.

Melody Basham, a student involved in the exhibition, explained that “multiples” are items that form larger bodies of work.

“For our visual artists this might have been smaller samples of their artwork, for the graphic designers it could have been prints or laser cuts of their designs and for fashion we offered accessories that would form part of our end designs.”

BCI tutor, Sonya Korohina, said the exhibition gave the students the opportunity to commercialise their creative practice (an integral part of the degree) and was a true testament to the talent among the students.

“Their passion and hard work resulted in an amazing exhibition and it is something they should be very proud of.”

In the true collaborative style that the degree is known for, Toi Ohomai music and culinary arts students provided live music and street food for the opening event, including BBQ ribs, lamb shawarma and wok tossed vegetables.
