With the results of the election in, the coming year is going to be a very interesting one. As expected, Mr. Peters is ‘kingmaker’. For the last 21 years he has pushed an anti-migrant platform, and has attempted to give it a veneer of credibility in this election by tagging it to pressures on infrastructure.

When he last spouted that message there were no infrastructure pressures, so we all see his message for what it really is. We wait with some trepidation to see what negative impact his presence in Government will bring.

Aaron Martin of NZIL can only speculate that there may be some restraint imposed given the large-scale infrastructure works promised in this election. They will place enormous pressure on the labour market, relieved only by labour and skills from offshore. We have already seen the destruction of the most successful Investor Policy. There has also been a dramatic change to Residence visa rules that is aimed to achieve reduction in the number of people who will qualify for residence.

The changes to work Visa rules on 28 August will see many of the same people sent down a path of repeated one year work visas until being forced to leave New Zealand after three years. The new Visa rules may discourage people accepting jobs in New Zealand, particularly in the restaurant industry, when they discover that they are able to get a one-year work visa but no capacity for their spouse and children to join them easily. If the changes bite harder than expected or if further restrictions are introduced through the influence of Mr Peters, employers will suffer along with the economy.
