How on earth can he do it?  That’s the question people are asking, as news spreads about the 30Sports1Day event, due to be held in Taupo on 17 February 2018.

30Sports1Day is a multisport event with a difference.  While most multisport events are held over multiple days, with many athletes competing (think the Olympic Games), 30Sports1Day will be one man, competing in 30 different sports, all within one day.

Paul Henson, known for his public-spirited exploits such as his healthy homes project Thermahomes, is encouraging New Zealanders to shed excess kilos and get in shape with his creative event, aiming to draw attention to New Zealand’s obesity epidemic and encourage Kiwis to make sure they’re getting the recommended 30 minutes of exercise per day.

Paul’s catch cry, “if I can do 30 sports in one day, you can do 30 minutes a day,” is getting nationwide attention as anticipation builds towards the event.

“I have done a new sport every year for 35 years and am fit, healthy and happy.  I'm 190 centimetres and 90 kilograms, my Waist to Height Ratio is 47 percent - the healthy range is 40 to 50 percent,” says Paul, who says taking 30 minutes of exercise a day not only helps maintain a healthy weight, it can also lower stress levels, improve posture, help with sleep and aid productivity, as well as warding off some of New Zealand’s most common diseases.

The Ministry of Health website says New Zealand has the third highest adult obesity rate in the OECD and the rates are rising.  “Almost one in three adult New Zealanders is obese.  Obesity can increase your risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, cancer, and other serious diseases.”

The sports in which Paul Henson intends to participate for the 30Sports1Day event include the following: Mountain bike, outdoor rock climb, kayak, water ski, jet ski, big boat sail, fishing, lake swim, road cycle, sky dive, small boat sail, windsurf, motorbike track, V8, motocross bike, gliding, clay target shoot, velodrome cycle, golf, soccer golf, frisbee golf, squash, volley ball, netball, basketball, table tennis, water polo, gym workout, indoor soccer, badminton, indoor rock climb, swim medley, bungy, tennis, mini train, bowls, run, hole in one golf, mini golf, cricket, parasail and paddle board.

If you were counting, you would have noticed there are 42 sports in that list, rather than 30.

“There need to be a number of extras, just in case of weather considerations or other anomalies, “says the ever-prepared Paul, who says he has awarded himself “a degree in common sense.”

The day will start in Kinloch and finish in Taupo.  Paul says everyone is welcome to come and watch any or all of the events and cheer him along.  Anyone who would like to join in one of the sports or volunteer on the day is most welcome to contact him to see how they can get involved in this unique event and help inspire New Zealanders to make a change for the better.
