Autumn flowers are now readily available with plentiful supplies of tulips, and proteas both pink and king white are now becoming available from the growers. Typically growers sell these to the markets for the next five months. The quality of proteas in particular is important because they should be a long lasting flower. When purchased king proteas should be very tight and not displaying any of the inner flower. They typically open up over the next three weeks and can be dried and held as a dry arrangement for upwards of a year. The smaller pink protea last a good three weeks, and you should remove any spotted leaves from around the flower and give a good clip of the stems every three to five days.

Roses are extremely plentiful and it’s really pleasing to see the longer length New Zealand rose now becoming available in quantity. The Floral Studio often get asked what’s the difference between the various rose varieties.  Top of the range roses are imported from Columbia. These are very long stemmed and in quite diverse and unusual colours. In fact it is now possible to purchase black roses – all of these are grown in Columbia.

New Zealand roses come in different lengths, with most of the shorter stem flowers purchased by supermarkets, whereas florists tend to favour longer 50 and 60 cm lengths. This makes it much easier to put together beautiful bouquets. New Zealand roses come in much more stock standard colours, but a specialist variety called David Austin comes in a much wider range with many variegated varieties.

Antique roses are very popular for early autumn weddings, along with beautiful blush colours and grey green variegated eucalyptus.  Roses are the flower of love and very recently The Floral Studio have been designing bouquets with a combination of antique pink/brown, red and white roses. These bouquets are very rustic and are perfect for every occasion.

Some flowers we would expect to be readily available at the present time are not. Chrysanthemums are in this category. Growing conditions in the United States are proving particularly challenging, and this has also been true of leather fern, a type of greenery used extensively in smaller bouquets.

Orchids are also in short supply. The smaller Singapore orchids are available in a limited range of colours. The larger cymbidiums are not yet available and don’t normally appear in shops until mid June.

Remember if you would like a quote on any arrangement The Floral Studio ask you to give them a ring on 09 3604541 or make an enquiry via their webpage enquiries@floralstudio.co.nz. They also have a vacancy for a full time experienced florist and would love to hear from you if you are interested.
