Media Release on behalf of Senior Constable STURKENBOOM of West Coast Search & Rescue.
At about 2pm on Thursday 7th June 2007, the West Coast Police were notified of a group of Outdoor Education students stranded because of high water levels at Fox River near Punakaiki.
At about 2.30pm a local helicopter along with Search and Rescue personnel were dispatched to locate and uplift the stranded party.
A short time later the group was located safe and well. They were transported by helicopter across the Fox River to their bus waiting at the roadside.
Police advise the group did the right thing by not crossing the high river and thank the experienced helicopter pilot for the rescue effort.
